Chicago's south lakefront is becoming a Black-plurality mirror image of the city's north lakefront. It's just taking longer to get there. With the right investment we can accelerate the process.
Hey Pete, great article! Although as a YIMBY I disagree with some of your takes, I always find your perspective incredibly valuable and a nuanced and necessary critique. Given the history of Black folks and Black urbanism I think a Black centered perspective on Chicago sorely needed in public discourse about Chicago as a city.
A follow up question about this post: have you considered more about what it would look like to avoid the revitalization of the south side lake front “too well?” Or rather, if you have specific policy prescriptions to avoid that? You stated “Careful planning would be needed to avoid this outcome” but it strikes me that race neural policy for this might be hard to construct and a specifically radicalized policy for this would face a lot of headwinds in the current political environment. I’m also curious to see if it is even possible to avoid the “too much success” more so now post the Quantum Campus they’re constructing at Steelworkers park.
